Spirulina is a substance derived from algae and it appears to be a most impressive cancer fighting supplement.
A 1995 human study of pre-cancerous lesions, spirulina extracts were given to test subjects and in one year, 45% were completely in remission just from taking spirulina extracts for 12 months! B. Mathew, R. Sankaranarayanan, P. P. Nair et al., Nutrition and Cancer, 1995. Mathew et. al. have deduced that the combined antioxidant and immune modulation characteristics of Spirulina contain a biochemical mechanism that destroys cancer tumor cells and prevents a full blown cancer. Cancer is defined by abnormal growth of cells. The cancer cells multiply and expand, leading to cancerous tumors and any cell in the body can develop cancer. Spirulina is a blue algae that contains vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and several plant compounds such as C-phycocyanin.
A 2009 study used Spirulina to treat cancer (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19521547). The study was conducted by a research team from Egypt, headed by MF Ismail, from Mansoura, University. They published their in vivo study in June 2009 in the International Journal of Biological Science. The study found Spirulina platensis was effective in treating liver cancer. They discovered that the incidence of liver tumors was drastically reduced from 80 percent to 20 percent in patients taking spirulina supplements! They also found that C-phycocyanin, an active ingredient in spirulina, increased survival rate in animal subjects suffering from liver cancer. Mathew and his researchers looked at the effects of Spirulina on oral carcinogenesis, in particular leukoplakia.

The study included 77 cancer patients and significant tumor regression was found to occur after topical application or taking supplements containing Spirulina extract. The authors also reported that there was no rise in the serum concentration of retinal β-carotene despite supplementation and concluded that other compounds contained in Spirulina may have been responsible for the anticancer effects. They are not sure why Spirulina works but are convinced that their results are accurate. The study was not a double blind study and it was also not a nonrandomized trial and the reason why they did not follow this scientific protocol is probably due to the huge cost involved in doing a scientific study that passes the scientific communities standards for evidence. A study with all the controls can cost millions and this factor often makes research trials impossible to conduct due to lack of funding. Spirulina is a nutrient that can be purchased at a health food store and cannot be patented. Therefore, drug companies that almost always fund research studies on drugs, would not be interested in funding a Spirulina study as there is no profit in it for them.
Although chemo drugs like Cisplatin may be effective in targeting and killing cancerous cells, these drugs are very dangerous and can induce kidney toxicity. Spirulina was proven to protect the kidneys from being damaged by cisplatin, and if you are taking Chemo, you had better start taking spirulina as it can only help you. (The study was published in the December 2006 issue of "Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology.") The scientists also determined that spirulina did not decrease the effectiveness of chemo medication.
A June 2009, Mayo Clinic report on Liver Cancer in rats titled…"Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy" reported that mitochondria-mediated apoptosis was found to occur in MCF-7 human breast carcinoma cells when the rats were given selenium-enriched Spirulina extract! T Chen et al: October 2009

Spirulina contains the blue pigment phycocyanin, a biliprotein which has been conclusively proven to inhibit cancer formation. Spirulina obtains its green color from chlorophyll. According to Alan Keith Tillotson's "One Earth Herbal Sourcebook," the high levels of chlorophyll in spirulina may explain its ability to stop cancer colonies from forming. Tillotson states in his book, "Foods and herbs that contain high levels of chlorophyll show pharmacological evidence of cancer prevention, perhaps because pigments in green vegetables (and algae) bind with and thus stimulate excretion of cancer-causing chemicals."

A Spirulina dietary supplement was revealed to delay the onset of motor symptoms and disease progression, reducing inflammatory markers and motor neuron death in a G93A mouse model of ALS. Spirulina, an early food source eaten by the Aztecs, may have a combined antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect on motor neurons, according to the researchers.
The study's findings were published in the 2010, volume 3 issue of the Open Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Journal.

Inhibition of HIV-1 Replication by an Aqueous Extract of Arthrospira platensis

An aqueous extract of the blue-green filamentous algae Arthrospira platensis (previously called Spirulina platensis) inhibited HIV-1 replication in human T-cell lines, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and Langerhans cells (LC).
Extract concentrations ranging between 0.3 and 1.2 g/ml reduced viral production by approximately 50% (50% effective concentration [EC50]) in PBMCs. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of extract for PBMC growth ranged between 0.8 and 3.1 mg/ml. Depending on the cell type used, therapeutic indices ranged between 200 and 6000. The extract inactivated HIV-1 infectivity directly when preincubated with virus before addition to human T-cell lines.
Fractionation of the extract revealed antiviral activity in the polysaccharide fraction and also in a fraction depleted of polysaccharides and tannins. We conclude that aqueous A platensis extracts contain antiretroviral activity that may be of potential clinical interest. HIV-1, the causative agent of AIDS, is spreading rapidly. ...... As the AIDS epidemic continues to escalate, the development of new drugs for treatment of HIV-1-infected individuals remains a challenge.
